Details: Zelenskyy mentioned the role of the US in security guarantees as he outlined his vision of a just peace for Ukraine. He believes such peace must include "strong, powerful security guarantees", adding that "NATO is the best option for us".
Quote: "We are fighting for this and will continue to fight. If not [referring to NATO membership – ed.], I would not want to speculate on alternatives. However, any security guarantees without the US are weak security guarantees for Ukraine."
More details: Zelenskyy cited Israel as an example. Although not a NATO member, Israel has security guarantees from the US and other nations that have supported it in repelling drone and missile attacks.
Quote: "There are many aspects to these security guarantees. So far, no one has proposed such guarantees for Ukraine."
The president emphasised that security guarantees are a crucial component of a strong position for Ukraine in any negotiations with Russia.
Background: European Commission President Kaja Kallas has said that Western countries should stop pressuring Ukraine into peace talks and instead ensure their promises of security guarantees to Kyiv are not empty.
