Munition explodes in hands of radio presenter in Kyiv radio station mid-broadcast

An explosion occurred in the studio of the Army FM radio station in Kyiv on the morning of Sunday, 19 January when a presenter handled an explosive device during a live broadcast.

Details: The source reported that at around 10:50 on Sunday, 19 January, in the Central House of Officers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on Hrushevskyi Street, an Army FM radio presenter picked up a VP-9 fuze and started fiddling with it in her hands, triggering an explosion. The source noted that the detonator had been brought to the studio earlier by a guest from the military as a used mock-up of a munition.
As a result of the explosion, the woman sustained shrapnel wounds to her arm and abdomen and was taken to hospital, where her condition is reported as stable.
The authorities are considering entering the incident in the Unified Register of Pre-Trial Investigations with a preliminary legal categorisation based on Article 263.1 of Ukraine's Criminal Code (illegal handling of weapons, ammunition or explosives).
Updated: Kyiv police reported that they are investigating the circumstances behind the explosion that happened in the radio station's studio.
Quote: "Preliminary findings indicate that the explosion was caused by a military detonator, which was present in the studio as an exhibit. A woman aged around 25 sustained injuries and was taken to hospital.
Criminal proceedings have been initiated under Article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (Illegal handling of weapons, ammunition or explosives). The circumstances of the incident are being investigated."
