Czech foreign minister reacts to fatalities from Russia's morning attack on Kyiv

Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský has condemned Russia's morning attack on Kyiv on 1 January, which resulted in two fatalities.

Details: Lipavský said that on New Year’s Day, a time of peace and hope, Russia chose violence by attacking Kyiv and taking the lives of innocent people.

He stated that Czech diplomacy would continue to "stand firmly with Ukrainians – because peace begins with holding the aggressor accountable".

Background:

  • Wreckage from a Russian drone fell on a residential building in Kyiv’s Pecherskyi district on the morning of 1 January, partially destroying the top two floors and causing a fire. Two people had been killed as a result of the attack. 
  • Russian forces had been attacking Ukraine with drones from southern and northern directions since the evening of 31 December.
