Ukrainian air defence downs 63 Russian drones overnight, 46 more disappear from radar
The Russians bombarded Ukraine with 111 Shahed attack drones and other types of UAVs on the night of 31 December-1 January. Ukrainian air defence forces have destroyed 63 drones, while 46 more failed to reach their targets.

Quote from the Air Force: "As of 09:30, 63 Shahed attack UAVs and other types of drones have been confirmed downed in Poltava, Sumy, Kyiv, Chernihiv, Cherkasy, Zaporizhzhia, Zhytomyr, Khmelnytskyi, Kirovohrad and Mykolaiv oblasts.
Due to active counteraction by the Ukrainian defence forces, 46 enemy decoy drones disappeared from radar (causing no adverse effects), and two more flew to Russia and Belarus."
Details: It is reported that the Russians launched the drones from the Russian cities of Bryansk, Oryol and Primorsko-Akhtarsk and temporarily occupied Crimea.
The air attack was repelled by aircraft, anti-aircraft missile troops, electronic warfare units, mobile fire groups of the Air Force and the Ukrainian defence forces.
Background:
- Since the evening of 31 December, Russian troops have been attacking Ukraine with attack drones from the south and north.
- An air-raid warning was issued in the capital and several oblasts of Ukraine due to Russian attack drones approaching from the northeast. Ukrainian air defence responded to the drones in Kyiv Oblast and the city of Kyiv.
- On the morning of 1 January, pieces of a Russian drone fell on a residential building in Kyiv’s Pecherskyi district, partially destroying the top two floors and causing a fire. A non-residential building is on fire in Kyiv’s Sviatoshynskyi district, and a tram track was damaged. Six people were injured.
