Quote: "At 07:00 Kyiv time on 1 January 2025, the Agreement on Cooperation between the Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine and Gazprom for the physical points of connection between the gas transmission systems of Ukraine and the Russian Federation of 30 December 2019 expired. Therefore, the transport of natural gas from the Sudzha entry point on Ukraine's eastern border to the exit points on the western and southern borders has been stopped."

Details: As a result, the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine has stopped.

The company added that international partners were informed about the termination of gas transit in accordance with the established procedure.

"Ukraine's Gas Transmission System Operator has prepared its infrastructure in advance to operate in zero transit mode and ensure reliable gas supply to Ukrainian consumers. The company's team is ready to work under the new conditions," said Dmytro Lypa, CEO of the Gas TSO of Ukraine.

In particular, the Ukrainian operator has agreed to increase its guaranteed capacities to ensure that it can supply gas both to Ukraine and through Ukraine to European consumers.

The company has also optimised its costs by reducing its own gas consumption and optimising assets outside the gas transmission system.

Background:

  • The termination of the transit agreement between Russia and Ukraine on 31 December will have little impact on the strengthened European gas market.
  • The Ukrainian government is not conducting negotiations on continuing Russian gas transit after the current agreement expires.
  • Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev expressed confidence in the outcome of the talks between Russia and Ukraine to ensure the continuation of Russian gas supplies through Ukraine to several European countries.
  • Ukraine does not intend to extend the gas transit agreement with Russia, which expires at the end of 2024, and is ready to discuss the transit of gas from other suppliers through its gas transmission system if Europe requests it.
