Two people killed in morning Russian attack on Kyiv – photos

Wreckage from a Russian drone fell on a residential building in Kyiv’s Pecherskyi district on the morning of 1 January, partially destroying the top two floors and causing a fire. Two people have been killed as a result of the attack.

Details: Kyiv City Military Administration said wreckage fell in the Pecherskyi district as a result of the Russian drone attack targeting Kyiv. Early reports indicate that the wreckage landed on a non-residential building.

Details: Kyiv City Military Administration also noted that air defence systems are responding in the capital and urged residents to stay in shelters until the all-clear is given.

Updated: Klitschko later reported a fire on the roof and in one apartment of a residential building in the Pecherskyi district. One person has sought medical assistance.

The mayor also mentioned wreckage falling on another non-residential building in the same district.

Kyiv City Military Administration said that wreckage in the Pecherskyi district had caused a fire on the roof of a non-residential building. It also partially destroyed the attic floor of a five-storey residential building, igniting an area of 20 square metres.

Klitschko later confirmed that the top two floors of the residential building in the Pecherskyi district had been partially destroyed. Emergency services are at the scene and one individual was hospitalised.

Klitschko also reported a fire in a non-residential building in the Sviatoshynskyi district, "As a result of wreckage falling, windows in a residential building in the Sviatoshynskyi district were broken, near garages where the fire occurred. The tram track was also partially damaged."

At 08:25, the mayor wrote about three people who were injured in the Pecherskyi district, two of whom were hospitalised.

At around 09:00, Klitschko reported that four people had sustained injuries in the Russian attack on the capital. Two of them were taken to hospital. The other two were treated by medics on the spot. Most of them were from Kyiv’s Pecherskyi district.

A few minutes later, Klitschko wrote that the number of those who were injured had increased to six. Four were treated on the spot. One of them is a pregnant woman.

Kyiv City Military Administration reported at 11:13 that a woman's body had been found under the rubble of a residential building in Kyiv’s Pecherskyi district that had been damaged in the morning attack. The number of people who sustained injuries increased to seven, including two pregnant women.

The search and rescue operation is ongoing.

At 12:25, Tymur Tkachenko, the new Head of Kyiv City Military Administration, reported that a second person had been killed. 

Background:

  • Russian forces had been attacking Ukraine with drones from southern and northern directions since the evening of 31 December.
  • An air-raid warning had been issued in the city of Kyiv and several oblasts due to the approach of Russian drones from the northeast. Air defence systems were responding in Kyiv Oblast.
