Details: Police are investigating Cammy Day over allegations of inappropriate behavior. He allegedly sent messages to refugees, asking about their sexual preferences.
Ukrainian refugees also reported that the politician invited them on dates, complimented them and sent heart and kiss emojis.
In 2022, Cammy Day chaired Edinburgh City Council. Since then, the politician, 50, has been considered one of the most influential Labour figures in Scotland.
He was a vocal supporter of aiding Ukrainian refugees who settled in Edinburgh after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
However, Ukrainian refugees have complained about numerous messages from the politician on various social media platforms and dating websites. They said he actively invited women out for drinks.
Quote from one refugee: "When Cammy Day first messaged me on several social media platforms, I was surprised that someone holding such a high position was interested in me. I had seen him a few times at pro-Ukrainian events. He found me and followed me on social media, liking my stories intensively and sending kiss emojis, especially when I posted photos from the gym or swimming pool."
Another woman shared that she tried to remain polite and avoided discussing sexual topics.
Quote from another refugee: "Several of my friends faced similar situations when he messaged them on social media and in a dating app. One of my Ukrainian friends said this man showed sexual interest for a while, but I don’t know what exactly happened or why he focused on Ukrainians."
Tabloids write that Ukrainian women had contacted the police about the offensive messages, but officers initially did not find anything criminal.
On 22 October 2024, however, a formal complaint about the politician’s inappropriate behavior was filed with the police, prompting an investigation.
Currently, law enforcement is reviewing messages sent over the past 18 months and interviewing Cammy Day’s colleagues and other senior officials.
