German opposition leader calls for creation of contact group to end war in Ukraine

Details: Merz noted that over the next "weeks and months," there should not be any individual peace initiatives from Europe but rather a common European opinion.
"I have a proposal to form a contact group of Germany, France, Poland, and the United Kingdom – the four major European countries, and NATO to exchange views [on ending Russia’s war against Ukraine – ed.], and thus develop a common vision with the United States," the German opposition leader said.
For his part, Zelenskyy confirmed the idea of creating such a group and noted in this context "how interestingly opinions intersect."
Background:
- Earlier, Merz assured Zelenskyy that Germany would do everything to support Ukraine.
- At the beginning of his visit to Kyiv, the German politician also said that Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin would only negotiate if Ukraine could defend itself.
