Then, on social media, news of an explosion and detonation of rocket fuel appeared, which was linked to the destruction of air defence system components.

This is the second account that the Ukrainian military successfully targeted Russian S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems in November, following the destruction of the S-400 air defence system in Kursk Oblast on 23 November.

The S-400 is a Russian long- and medium-range anti-aircraft missile system designed to counter long-range radar detection and control aircraft, electronic warfare systems, air command posts, and strategic bombers.

Background:

  • In early December, Defence Intelligence of the United Kingdom reported that the daily average losses of the Russians in Ukraine, both killed and wounded, hit a new record high in November.
  • Pentagon Chief Lloyd Austin, speaking at the Reagan National Defense Forum in California, stated that Russia's losses since the start of its full-scale invasion into Ukraine exceeded US$200 billion.
