General Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the Russian General Staff, has called General Charles Brown, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, to discuss, among other things, the Russian attack on Ukraine with an Oreshnik ballistic missile.

Details: The conversation took place on 27 November, six days after the Oreshnik missile strike on the city of Dnipro, which Russian leader Vladimir Putin called a response to Ukraine's permission to fire US-supplied missiles at Russian territory. The launch of the Oreshnik was also accompanied by Putin's statements about Russia's right to strike at countries that supply weapons to Ukraine.

During the conversation, Gerasimov supposedly stated that the launch of the Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile was planned in advance and was not a Russian reaction to Ukraine's use of US-delivered ATACMS missiles on Russian territory.

ABC News noted that Gerasimov had initiated the conversation to warn the West of hypersonic missile tests in the eastern Mediterranean. He called on the US Navy to stay away from the target area to ensure safety.

Quote from Brown's spokesman Captain JD Dorsey: "The leaders discussed a number of global and regional security issues to include the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. At the request of General Gerasimov, General Brown agreed to not proactively announce the call."
