Details: The German government has approved a new National Security and Defence Industry Strategy to prepare the defence industry for the new challenges posed by the war in Ukraine.

It replaces the 2020 strategic document and also considers the consequences of the war in Ukraine. It is meant to serve as a guiding principle for the federal government.

Germany should become "defence-ready as soon as possible" per the new strategy. The word "war readiness", which German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has used several times recently, does not appear in the document.

The document says companies based in Germany that generate a significant part of their turnover in the security and defence sector" will play a central role.

The key industries include IT and communication technologies, artificial intelligence, ammunition, military shipbuilding, tanks and aircraft systems.

Background:

  • It was reported that the German government will publish a new defence industry development strategy by the end of the year. The strategy aims to cut red tape and speed up arms production.
  • Pistorius himself said in September that Germany is ready to become the main support for deterring Russia's aggression in Europe.
