Sybiha noted that Russian attacks on power substations, which are identified by the IAEA as critical to nuclear safety and security, pose a threat to global security.
Background:
- In October, Energoatom, Ukraine's state-owned nuclear power company, identified seven substations critical for power supply from nuclear power plants, which are covered by the work of IAEA missions.
- During a Russian attack on the night of 15-16 November and the morning of 17 November, four electrical substations, which the IAEA had identified as crucial to Ukraine's nuclear safety, were damaged.
- Further Russian attacks on Ukraine's power grid could lead to an emergency at one of the three operating nuclear power plants still under Kyiv's control.
