"This year there were 500 suspicious incidents in Europe. Up to 100 of them can be attributed to Russian hybrid attacks, espionage, influence operations. We need to send a strong signal to Moscow that this won't be tolerated," Lipavský said.

Background:

  • Recently, the UK government stressed that Russia was ready to launch a "wave of cyberattacks" against the country.
  • It has also been reported that Sweden and Norway are abandoning plans to create fully cashless systems because they fear this would leave them vulnerable to security threats from Russia.
  • Given the security risks, Admiral Rob Bauer, Chair of the NATO Military Committee, said that the Alliance countries would have to spend about 3% of their gross domestic product on defence.
