US and Germany not ready to invite Ukraine to NATO – media

Germany and the United States are not yet ready to support an official invitation to Ukraine to join NATO.

Details: The source said that the position of the US and Germany is a key obstacle to considering this issue.

Quote: "The problem lies mainly within the US and Germany. We can only guess what they are most concerned about, but Ukraine's accession to NATO is not on the agenda."

Details: The source also said that Slovakia and Hungary also oppose Ukraine's invitation. "But this is evident from the statements of their politicians," the publication says.

Background:

• Earlier, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said for the first time that Ukraine could join NATO with Article 5 partially in force, but this idea has not yet been detailed.
• On 28 November, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called on his NATO counterparts to invite Ukraine to join the Alliance: "I urge you to approve the decision to invite Ukraine to join the Alliance as one of the outcomes of the NATO foreign ministers’ meeting on 3-4 December 2024," the statement said.
