"Italy’s contribution – one of the largest by a single country – will help stabilise electricity supplies to millions of war-affected Ukrainians at this difficult time," the statement said.

The ministry added that with this contribution, Italy reaffirms its continued support for the resilience of Ukraine's energy sector.

"Italy’s commitment to contribute to the Fund comes at a crucial time as attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure continue. The contribution also recognises the Fund’s ability to quickly provide the equipment the country desperately needs to restore energy supplies," the statement added.

For reference: The Ukraine Energy Support Fund was established in spring 2022 at the joint initiative of Ukraine's Ministry of Energy and the European Commission.

Background:

  • In early September, the European Commission announced the allocation of an additional €40 million to Ukraine amid ongoing Russian attacks on energy infrastructure.
  • In November, Germany's Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action announced another €65 million to help repair Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
