Details: In the address, recorded for television and made public before the broadcast on Tuesday, he said that Germany would continue to support Ukraine but at the same time promised that the government would "keep a cool head so that the war does not spread".
"Many citizens are looking at Russia's brutal war of aggression against Ukraine with a growing sense of anxiety. I can assure you that we will not leave Ukraine in the lurch and will support it like no other country in Europe," Scholz said.
Background:
- Earlier in December, Scholz had a telephone conversation with US President-elect Donald Trump.
- During the conversation, the parties "agreed that Russia's war on Ukraine has been going on for far too long and that it is essential to move as quickly as possible towards a just, equitable and enduring peace".
- Earlier, Scholz expressed the opinion that his opposition to the supply of long-range Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine was in line with Trump's position.
