39% of Ukrainians won't spend holidays with loved ones due to military service, survey reports

Most Ukrainians have a loved one with whom they would like to spend New Year's and Christmas. However, 39% will not be able to do so because their partners are in the military.

Source: survey conducted by the Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation in cooperation with the Razumkov Center sociological service from 29 November to 14 December

Details: 38% of respondents have loved ones abroad, making celebrating New Year and Christmas together impossible.

What moods prevail in the country?

At present, Ukrainians feel hopeful (55%), anxious (45%), optimistic (29%), fearful (26%), and confused (26%) about their future.

Compared to August and December 2023, respondents are more likely to report negative feelings, such as:

  • Fear (+11% over the year)
  • confusion (+7%);
  • hopelessness (+6%);
  • anxiety (+6%);
  • pessimism (+5%).

The survey involved 1,518 respondents aged 18 and older living on the territory controlled by the Ukrainian government. The sample did not include residents of territories temporarily not controlled by the Ukrainian authorities.
