Russia doubles down on efforts to block YouTube

A new wave of YouTube blocking is currently underway in Russia. Several Russian news outlets have claimed that many users in the country are unable to access the platform.

Details: In addition to this, traffic from Russia has dropped by 80%, from 40 points in the summer to 8.5 as of December 2024.

This is not the first time that Russian officials have restricted access to YouTube. However, now this appears to be permanent, since some users say that they are unable to access the platform even while using VPN.

According to social media and traffic statistics from Russia, the blocking began to tighten about mid-December. The majority of the complaints from Russian users have arrived in the last few days.
