Ukraine's Ambassador reports over 1000 applications submitted to join Ukrainian Legion in Poland
Over a thousand applications have been submitted to the Ukrainian Legion, which is being formed in Poland (The International Legion for the Defence of Ukraine, or the Ukrainian Legion, is a military unit of the Ukrainian Ground Forces composed of foreign volunteers).
Source: Vasyl Bodnar, Ukraine's Ambassador to Poland, in an interview with Suspilne, as reported by European Pravda
Details: As part of the formation of the legion, the first set of contracts was signed in November and the first Ukrainian unit was formed. The next recruitment is scheduled for 10 January.
Bodnar stated that he could not disclose the exact number of applications, as it remained confidential at the request of the Ministry of Defence. He noted that there were over a thousand applications currently under review by the relevant commission and expressed hope that this number would continue to increase.
He said that the Polish side provides "quite serious conditions" for basic military training for those who are accepted into the legion.
After basic military training, depending on the specialisation of a particular soldier, they move to specialised training grounds to prepare them for performing certain functions.
The ambassador explained that, following this process, individuals are assigned to the relevant military unit within Ukraine, where those who have joined the Ukrainian Legion come under the direct authority of a specific military unit.
Background:
- As reported in mid-November, the total number of applications to the Ukrainian Legion in Poland had increased to 600.
- The establishment of the Ukrainian Legion in Poland was envisaged in the security agreement between the two countries.
