Details: The Farmers' Power Association said it was concerned about delays in extending restrictions on the import of grains and oilseeds and wanted to blockade all checkpoints on the border with Ukraine.
Farmers are unhappy that the current restrictions are in place until the end of the year, the draft law on the extension was published only this week, and it may not be actually adopted until January-February 2025. They see this as a risk of lower prices for their products.
If the restrictions are extended in time, the farmers promise not to protest.
Daniela Turculec, spokesperson for the Ministry of Agriculture of Moldova, assured that the draft law will definitely be adopted by the end of December.
Background:
- On 4 October 2023, Moldova introduced import licensing for wheat, corn and sunflower during the state of emergency in order to protect local farmers.
- Polish farmers are also stepping up their protests with the onset of winter, this time with the main cause of discontent being the trade agreement between the European Union and South American countries (Mercosur).
- There is also dissatisfaction with the agreement in other European countries, including France.
