Estonia and Lithuania extend sanctions against Georgian authorities

Lithuania has expanded the list of Georgian politicians and government officials subject to sanctions for resorting to violence against anti-government protesters.

Details: Budrys announced that Lithuania, in coordination with Estonia, had added 17 more Georgian officials to its sanctions list, including Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze.

The Lithuanian official called for joint action at the EU level, stating that violence and repression against peaceful protesters, journalists, and the opposition would not be tolerated.

Earlier, Estonia announced that it had banned 14 more Georgian officials and judges, including Prime Minister Kobakhidze.

Anti-government protests in Georgia have continued since the end of November after the Georgian authorities announced a pause on the country's European Union accession until the end of 2028.

Georgian security forces have been beating and harshly detaining protesters, as well as foreigners and journalists.

Earlier, on 14 December, the only candidate nominated by the ruling party, ex-footballer Mikheil Kavelashvili, was elected "president" of Georgia.

The current president, Salomé Zourabichvili, and the Georgian opposition consider the recent presidential election illegitimate.
