Details: Starmer emphasised that since Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin has shown no willingness to make concessions, it is crucial to bolster support for Ukraine to ensure Kyiv is in the strongest possible position for the future.

He urged G7 leaders to "continue maximising Putin’s pain" by ramping up military support for Ukraine and intensifying economic pressure, including imposing additional sanctions where possible.

During the conversation, the leaders agreed that maintaining G7 unity would be essential in these uncertain times and emphasised the need for collective efforts to ensure international stability and security.

Background

  • On Wednesday, EU ambassadors agreed upon the 15th package of sanctions in response to Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine.
  • The proposals for the 15th sanctions package, prepared by the European Commission for EU member states, include the addition of 29 legal entities and 54 individuals to the sanctions list.
  • For the first time, companies from China are expected to be included on the sanctions list in response to reports of their support for military production in Russia.
  • New measures to combat Russia's shadow fleet, which bypasses the price cap on oil transported by sea, are also under consideration. As part of these efforts, 48 tankers may be blacklisted.
