The European Union will decide on further assistance to Ukraine based on the outcome of the US elections, but Brussels’ broad line of support will remain.

Details: According to DW’s source, the European Union is "holding its breath" and waiting for the results of the US elections before deciding whether to provide additional help to Ukraine.

The source added that if Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump wins and potentially decides to stop providing assistance to Ukraine, "the EU’s line will remain the same as before – to support Ukraine".

"But whether all 27 members of the European Union will continue this line is another question," the EU official said.

The source pointed out that the European Union has always managed to preserve unity in this regard, but there is no unanimity among all the member states, particularly Hungary, which is opposed to the EU's decision to provide support to Kyiv and takes uncoordinated unilateral actions.

According to the official, even if Washington refuses to back Kyiv, Europe will not necessarily follow suit; on the contrary, it may decide to step up its support.

Similarly, the source stated, if the United States were to decide to engage in discussion with Russia without involving Ukrainian officials, "I'm not sure that it will convince others to do the same."

The US presidential election takes place on 5 November. Polling stations in all states have opened across the country, with Hawaii being the last to vote.
