Details: In an interview, Merkel emphasised that Russia must not win the war, stating: "This is not only in Ukraine's interest, but also in our own, as we cannot allow Putin to win." She also pointed out that, as chancellor, she did everything possible to prevent such an escalation.

While condemning Russia's invasion of Ukraine as a blatant violation of international law, Merkel acknowledged that "diplomatic solutions must always be considered alongside military ones".

The former German chancellor suggested that diplomatic talks should not take place immediately but rather when the right time comes, although she did not specify when that would be.

Merkel also reaffirmed her support for the German government's actions in aiding Ukraine, noting that it would be difficult for Ukraine to defeat Russia.

  • Recently, the former Chancellor released her memoirs in Germany, which has led to her increased media presence after nearly three years of silence.
  • In a recent interview with German newspaper Der Spiegel, Merkel explained that when Putin first became president, he had no intention of attacking Ukraine. Over time, however, his plans took shape, partly in response to the actions of the West.
  • She also voiced her frustration at being made a "scapegoat" for the war in Ukraine.
