The Group of Seven (G7) countries plan to intensify pressure on China by adopting stronger language in a communiqué concerning Beijing and pledging new measures in response to China's support for Russia.

Details: G7 foreign ministers meeting in Italy on Monday and Tuesday are expected to pledge to take "appropriate measures consistent with our legal systems, against actors in China and in other third countries" that support Russia's "war machine". This is stated in a preliminary draft of the communiqué, which has been seen by Bloomberg.

If adopted, this wording would represent an escalation from the G7 foreign ministers' meeting in April, which urged China to stop supplying dual-use goods to Russia. In July, NATO referred to China as a "decisive enabler" of Russia's war against Ukraine.

Communiqués often change before the final version is published. The wording may still be adjusted.

Background

  • Last week, European Union foreign ministers discussed this matter, and German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock warned that China's assistance to Russia "will and must have consequences".
  • The EU External Action Service previously confirmed that there were indications that China was producing drones for Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine.
  • Reports indicating that China is assisting Russia with drones surfaced in September.
