Only father survives: family of internally displaced persons killed in Russian attack on Hlukhiv, Sumy Oblast

The Russians struck a temporary accommodation facility in the town of Hlukhiv, Sumy Oblast, with drones on the night of 18-19 November. Among the deceased was a family that had moved to the town from the border Esman hromada in search of a safe place [a hromada is an administrative unit designating a village, several villages, or a town, and their adjacent territories – ed.].

Details: Hlukhiv.City said that the Russian attack killed internally displaced persons (IDPs) from the village of Ulanove in Sumy Oblast: mother Tetiana, 43, and her sons Nikita, 20, and Vasyl, 7. The younger son was killed just a few days before his eighth birthday.

Only the father of the family survived.

"He just arrived yesterday, he was away at work," Zinaida Chmyrkova, a fellow villager, told journalists.

Zinaida said that the medical accommodation facility that came under fire was inhabited mainly by IDPs from Ulanove, who were evacuated to Hlukhiv from the border area.

"We were taken out from Ulanove, everyone was scattered across different places. They put people in dorm rooms here. All of Ulanove lived here," Zinaida says.

Another family was killed as a result of the attack on the accommodation facility in Hlukhiv – a woman, 83, and her son, 59.

A teenage girl, 13, and her brother, 14, were also among those who suffered from the attack. They sustained injuries and are now under medical supervision.

The State Emergency Service of Ukraine reported that the death toll from the attack has risen to 12 people. A total of 11 people were injured, including 2 children. The drone strike completely destroyed the entrance of the accommodation facility.
