Badra Gunba, the so-called "vice president" will become the acting leader of the republic.

Previously: The Abkhazian opposition rejected the proposal of country's leader Aslan Bzhania to hold "early elections". He was given an ultimatum to resign by the evening of 17 November. Otherwise, the opposition said, an "interim government" would be organised.

Background:

  • On 15 November, which was the day of the start of large-scale protests in Sukhumi, the opposition proposed two options to the authorities :
  • either the president, vice-president and prime minister resign, and the speaker of the parliament, Lasha Ashuba, acts as president until the elections;
  • or the president, vice president and prime minister resign, but before that, the president appoints a compromise figure as prime minister who will act as president.
