Details: Kyodo reported that Iwaya arrived in Ukraine to hold talks with officials, likely as a demonstration of Tokyo's support for Kyiv in its struggle against Russian military aggression, now involving North Korean troops.
Iwaya, who arrived in Ukraine by train from Poland after attending a regional economic meeting in Peru, is the first Japanese minister to visit the country since Shigeru Ishiba assumed the position of prime minister last month.
During his visit, Iwaya plans to meet with his Ukrainian counterpart Andrii Sybiha on Saturday and may later hold talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Background: Former Japanese Foreign Minister Yōko Kamikawa visited Ukraine earlier this year, in January.
