Russia has sentenced Russian Volunteer Corps commander Denis Kapustin and four fighters to life imprisonment in absentia in the case of the invasion of Bryansk Oblast.

Details: The Second Western District Military Court has sentenced five members of the Russian Volunteer Corps, which fights on the side of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, to life imprisonment in a criminal case over the invasion of Bryansk Oblast. The sentence was passed in absentia.

Kapustin was fined 2.5 million roubles (approx. US$25,000). The other defendants in the case are Alexander Galanov, Anton Zyryanov, Kirill Kanakhin and Alexei Ogurtsov, who were also sentenced to life imprisonment and fined 2 million roubles (approx. US$20,000) each.

For Denis Kapustin and Kirill Kanakhin, this is their second life sentence in Russia. Before that, they were convicted in absentia in a treason case.

Background: On 22 May 2023, fighters of the Russian Volunteer Corps entered the territory of the settlements of Lyubimovka and Churovichi in Bryansk Oblast of the Russian Federation.
