UK preparing for different scenarios regarding Trump's policy towards Ukraine
The UK government is considering possible options in the context of US President-elect Donald Trump's approach to Ukraine.
Source: Darren Jones, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, in an interview with Sky News, as reported by European Pravda
Details: Jones insisted that following Trump's victory in the US elections, the United Kingdom would not abandon its commitments to support Ukraine.
The minister added that this is why the UK is offering Ukraine £3 billion a year, which he said was difficult in the fiscal context of the UK, but the right decision.
The figure of £3 billion in support for Ukraine for 2024 was set by the previous Conservative government led by Rishi Sunak.
Jones said that UK officials "will be considering and planning lots of different scenarios, as they would do under any [US] administration, to make sure that the UK is in the strongest possible position".
Background:
- During his election campaign, Trump said that he would find a solution to end the war in Ukraine "in 24 hours", but did not explain how he would do this.
- The Wall Street Journal has reported that Trump's circle is considering the idea of freezing the front line with a demilitarised zone and a 20-year moratorium on Ukraine's NATO membership in order to fulfil the president-elect’s promise to "end the war quickly" in Ukraine.
