"[He's] too wise to forget that no just and lasting peace can be made behind the backs of Ukrainians and over the heads of Europeans. This would enshrine the right of the strongest, with dire consequences in Europe and other regions of the world," he added.
Background:
- During the election campaign, Trump claimed that he would find a solution to end the war in Ukraine "in 24 hours", though he did not explain how he would do it.
- The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump's entourage is considering the idea of freezing the front line with a demilitarised zone and a 20-year moratorium on Ukraine's NATO membership to fulfil his promise to "end the war quickly" in Ukraine.
- In this context, EU leaders at a meeting in Budapest discussed the possibility of continuing to provide military assistance to Ukraine if Donald Trump decides to withdraw US support.
