US announces new US$425mn aid package for Ukraine

The US Department of Defense announced a new military assistance package to Ukraine worth US$425 million on Friday, 1 November.

Details: The new US military aid package is provided under the Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA), which means a supply of weapons from US army stockpiles.

The package includes ammunition for NASAMS and HIMARS systems, Stinger missiles, c-UAS mobile missile systems, air-to-ground munitions, 155mm and 105mm artillery ammunition, TOW anti-tank projectiles, and Javelin and AT-4 anti-tank systems.

The list also includes Stryker armoured personnel carriers, small arms and ammunition, medical equipment, explosive munitions, spare parts, support equipment, services, training and transportation.

"The United States will continue to work together with some 50 Allies and partners through the Ukraine Defence Contact Group and its associated Capability Coalitions to meet Ukraine's urgently needed battlefield requirements and defend against Russian aggression," the Pentagon added.

Background: 

  • The current package of arms for Ukraine was announced by US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin on 31 October.
  • The previous US$400 million military aid package was announced on 21 October during Austin’s visit to Kyiv.
