The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has strongly condemned the latest launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile by North Korea on 31 October 2024.

Details: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that this launch was another provocation that undermines peace and stability not only on the Korean Peninsula but also in the world as a whole.

Details: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the launch of the missile, which reached a record height compared to previous tests, indicates progress in the DPRK's missile programme. 

Quote: "We call on our partners to take immediate action to resolutely counter the Russian and North Korean regimes – from increasing sanctions pressure on Moscow and Pyongyang to maximising Ukraine's capabilities within the framework of the Victory Plan presented by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy."

Background:

  • The US condemned the test of an intercontinental ballistic missile by the DPRK, which was launched towards Japan. According to a statement by a representative of the US presidential administration, this launch is a "flagrant violation of multiple UN Security Council resolutions".
  • North Korea is known to have fired a ballistic missile toward Japan on the morning of 31 October local time.
  • The launch came hours after the defence ministers of South Korea and the United States condemned North Korea's deployment of troops to Russia.
  • North Korea last fired several short-range ballistic missiles on 18 September.
