Canada has been trying to persuade other countries of the necessity of granting Ukraine permission for long-range strikes on targets within Russian territory.
Source: Ukrinform news agency, citing Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly after the Peace Formula conference, as reported by European Pravda
Details: Joly indicated that Canada supports allowing Ukraine to strike deep within Russia.
She emphasised that this is a part of Ukraine’s right to self-defence against Russian aggression.
Quote: "We are also seeking to persuade other countries to adopt this position."
Background:
- Previously, US intelligence and the Pentagon assessed that allowing Ukraine to conduct long-range strikes on Russian territory could bring Kyiv more drawbacks than benefits and thus recommended maintaining the current policy.
- Last month, the US president hinted at the possibility of lifting the relevant restrictions on Ukraine's use of long-range weapons, saying that his administration was "working on this issue".
- At the same time, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin supported the US restrictions on Ukraineʼs long-range strikes with Western weapons and insisted that it can defeat Russia even without such a capability.
