Mandatory evacuation of 500 children and their families announced for Ukraine's Sumy Oblast

Ukraine’s Coordination Headquarters for the Mandatory Evacuation of the Population has taken the decision to order the mandatory evacuation of 497 children in Sumy Oblast in Ukraine's northeast, as their lives are in danger.

Details: The mandatory evacuation will apply to children from 101 settlements in the oblast: 90 settlements in the Sumy district and 11 in the Konotop district.

Background:

  • On 30 September, a mandatory evacuation was announced with respect to children and their parents, legal guardians or other legal representatives from 90 settlements in seven hromadas in the Sumy district [a hromada is an administrative unit designating a town, village or several villages and their adjacent territories – ed.].
  • On 12 August, Volodymyr Artiukh, Head of Sumy Oblast Military Administration, reported that 20,800 people, including about 2,000 children, have been evacuated from Sumy Oblast since the evacuation started.
  • The administrations of two hromadas in Sumy Oblast announced the mandatory evacuation of children in early April 2024.
  • On 23 May, due to increased attacks by the Russian Federation, the authorities of Sumy Oblast announced the evacuation of people from the border hromadas of the Okhtyrka district.
  • On 13 May, evacuations began in Sumy Oblast from the towns of Bilopillia and Vorozhba.
