Details: The ministry noted that Austria had summoned the ambassador to "express grave concerns" over reports of the presence of North Korean weapons and troops in Russia.

"This military support in the war against Ukraine is a blatant violation of international law and undermines security in Europe and the Korean Peninsula," the statement said.

Background:

  • On 23 October, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin announced that the US has evidence that North Korean troops are in Russia, but what they are doing there is still unknown.
  • The European Commission noted that if reports of North Korean soldiers being deployed to Russia to join the war against Ukraine are confirmed, it will be fresh evidence of Russia's lack of interest in peace.
