Chancellor Olaf Scholz has stated that Germany will do everything possible to establish the circumstances of the explosions of the Russian Nord Stream gas pipeline in 2022, and prosecute those responsible.

Details: Asked whether he still trusts Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy after the recent media reports about possible involvement of Ukraine in the explosions at the Nord Stream pipelines, Scholz stressed that he was "on good terms" with the president.

"At the same time it’s absolutely clear to me that these things must be established. I’m glad that the Prosecutor General and our security structures have achieved the progress that has been reported everywhere," he added.

He added that Berlin expected that "nothing was hidden and that everything possible was done to prosecute those responsible".

  • On 15 August the Wall Street Journal published an investigation into the Nord Stream pipeline explosions in September 2022, claiming that the operation was approved by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who later attempted to cancel it once the CIA became aware of it. The operation was allegedly led by Valerii Zaluzhnyi, former Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
  • However, Spiegel reported that the Ukrainian citizen whom Germany was going to arrest in Poland for his participation in the Nord Stream gas pipeline bombing had left Polish territory as he had probably been warned about their intention to have him arrested.
