TikTok has removed accounts connected with Russian state-owned media outlets for "engaging in covert influence operations".

Details: The move is part of the site's efforts to prevent disinformation in the run-up to November's US presidential election, Sky News says.

The accounts in question belong to the Rossiya Segodnya media group, which owns the news services RIA Novosti and Sputnik, and TV-Novosti, the parent company of the RT TV channel.

TikTok noted that access to these accounts had been restricted in the UK and the EU, and their content worldwide was marked as state-controlled media.

However, they are now thought to have been permanently banned.
