Details: This will become the biggest assistance package provided by Washington for Kyiv since May.
One of the officials told Voice of America that the package would likely include air-to-ground munition for F-16 fighter jets, which would allow Ukrainian pilots to launch attacks deeper into the front line and the Russian air defence. This was also reported by Politico.
"The package also includes ammunition for HIMARS, patrol boats and armoured vehicles, along with 155mm rounds, 105 mm rounds and TOW missiles," VoA writes with reference to the source.
American officials say this package, which is still being finished and may change, is being delivered through the PDA (Presidential Drawdown Authority) mechanism which allows transferring armament from American military stockpiles.
The package will be announced at the forthcoming meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, US President Joe Biden and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris on 27 September.
Before that Jake Sullivan, National Security Advisor to the US President, announced a "considerable package" of military aid for Ukraine which should be ready by the end of September.
The White House has almost US$6 billion within the PDA mechanism. These funds may be lost when the US fiscal year ends in less than two weeks, and the White House and the Congress are working to solve this issue.
