Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen believes that Ukraine's allies should cease being hesitant to help the country in its fight and let the weapons provided be used against Russia.

Details: Frederiksen believes that it is time to stop the discussion about "red lines".

Quote: "It has been a mistake during this war to have a public discussion about red lines," as that is "simply giving the Russians too good a card in their hands."

She recalled that there are ongoing discussions around the question "are we allowed to give this?"

"It would be really good to stop the delays there have been. And I think that the restrictions on the use of weapons should be lifted," Frederiksen said.

The minister also does not believe that lifting the ban on strikes on Russian Federation territory will make the allies participants in the war, resulting in escalation at the front.

"My suggestion is, let us end the discussion about red lines. The most important red line has been crossed already. And that was when the Russians entered Ukraine. So I will not accept this premise, and I will never allow anyone from Russia to decide what is the right thing to do in NATO, in Europe or in Ukraine," she asserted.

Background:

  • On 20 September, Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence received the first €40.7 million from a Danish aid package aimed at supporting Ukrainian weapons production.
  • NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg is sceptical of Russian leader Vladimir Putin's threats, which come amid discussions about allowing Ukraine to launch long-range missiles deep into Russia.
  • The Times reported that the United States and the United Kingdom are likely to give Ukraine permission to use Storm Shadow missiles to strike Russian territory, but this decision may remain a secret to preserve the factor of surprise for the Russian side.
