Background:

  • The Ukrainian operation in Kursk Oblast began on 6 August 2024. On 10 August, the fifth day of the Ukrainian army's advance deeper into Russia, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged that Ukraine had pushed the war onto Russian territory.
  • On 27 August, Oleksandr Syrskyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, said that since the beginning of the operation in Kursk Oblast, Ukraine had captured 594 Russian soldiers and controlled more than 100 settlements or 1,294 sq. km of territory.
  • As known from open sources, the core of the Kursk operation consisted of two brigades of Ukraine’s Air Assault Forces – the legendary Lviv 80th Brigade and the newly formed Chernivtsi 82nd Brigade. In the second week of the operation, part of the 95th Air Assault Brigade joined them.
