Romanian president asks parliament to approve training centre for Ukrainian marines

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis has appealed to parliament to approve the establishment of a training centre in the country for training Ukrainian marines.

Iohannis emphasised in his letter to parliament the need to enhance and diversify the training of Ukrainian military personnel. 

This proposal was made within the framework of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group, also known as the Ramstein format, which oversees a mechanism aimed at strengthening the country’s naval capabilities.

Reports show that Romania will support the training of Ukrainian marines within its existing capabilities. 

Contributions from the international community will help sustain the centre's operations, while the UK will provide full funding for the initial phase of its development.

The centre is expected to operate for two years, subject to prior approval from military partners. 

Romania also reserves the right to withdraw from its commitments at any time during the training process.

• On 18 September, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha arrived in Romania on his first foreign visit in this position as part of his regional tour and met with his Romanian counterpart Luminița Odobescu.
