Russia's former defence minister visits North Korea

The Russian Security Council has announced that its chairman, former Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, paid a visit to Pyongyang on 13 September and was greeted by North Korean ruler Kim Jong Un.

Quote: "On 13 September, a group led by S.K. Shoigu, Secretary of the Russian Federation's Security Council, visited Pyongyang. As part of our countries' continuous strategic dialogue, we had a thorough discussion with Korean colleagues about a variety of bilateral and international problems."

Details: It is noted that "Shoigu was hosted by the Chairman of State Affairs of the DPRK, Comrade Kim Jong Un."

The report also noted that the meetings in Pyongyang "took place in an exceptionally trusting, friendly atmosphere" in line with the agreements reached during the state visit of Russian ruler Vladimir Putin to Pyongyang in June 2024.

"They will make an important contribution to the implementation of the provisions of the bilateral agreement on comprehensive strategic partnership they signed," the Russian Security Council added.

Background: In June 2024, Russian leader Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signed a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement which includes a provision about mutual assistance in case of aggression against either of these states.
