Kickboxing world champion Roman Holovatiuk killed in combat against Russia

Roman Holovatiuk, 28, a world champion in kickboxing and the Master of Sports of Ukraine, was killed on the frontline in Ukraine, fighting as part of the Ukrainian military.

Details: According to the Kamianets-Podilskyi City Council, "Roman chose a career in sports at the call of his heart, and he volunteered to go where he was most needed during the first days of the [full-scale] war".

The Sports Committee of Ukraine said that Holovatiuk would have turned 29 in September.

Holovatiuk was born in Khmelnytskyi Oblast in Ukraine’s west, and was one of the best athletes in WAKO kickboxing.

"He became famous in Ukraine and beyond aged 22, when he won a medal during the X World Games in Poland in 2017. He then continued his illustrious career in sports, becoming a WAKO kickboxing champion, World Games finalist, world champion, World and European Cup winner and the champion of Ukraine on multiple occasions," the Sports Committee said in a statement.

According to Wikipedia, Holovatiuk became the world champion in the K-1 division in October 2019 in Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina). In October 2021, he took third place at the World Championships in Lido di Jesolo (Italy) in the low kick division.
