Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský believes that Russia's military plans are not limited to the seizure of Ukraine.

Details: Lipavský rebuked those in Europe who consider it acceptable to "appease Russia" through concessions to Ukraine's interests.

Quote: "It is naive to think that if Russia won in Ukraine, its tanks would stop at its western borders. In this twisted vision, the sovereignty and integrity of nearby countries and their citizens' freedom would need to align with the Kremlin’s will."

More details: Lipavský also stressed that Russia is waging a war against the West, not against Ukraine, so allowing it to win would mean a "fundamentally insecure and volatile Europe".

He noted that Russia understands firmness and strength, and these are the tools that should be used. "Russian aggression has no limits unless we set them," he explained.

"If we truly believe in protecting our values, we must have the courage to act," Lipavský added.

Background

  • Earlier, Czech President Petr Pavel announced at a conference in Prague that the outcome of the war is unpredictable.
  • However, not all EU states share this view. Hungarian PM Viktor Orbán’s government, in particular, has no plans to change its policy towards Ukraine even if Trump loses the election.
