French law enforcement has accused Pavel Durov, the founder and CEO of the Telegram messenger, of 12 crimes.

Details: Durov is under investigation in a case about cybercrimes and extortion.

The French Prosecutor’s Office specified that he had been accused of 12 crimes:

  • refusing to transfer information relevant to investigations on the request of law enforcement agencies;
  • complicity in drug trafficking;
  • complicity in cybercrimes;
  • complicity in extortion;
  • laundering of illegally obtained funds;
  • illegal providing of cryptographic services and tools for facilitating confidentiality;
  • complicity in storing pornographic content featuring minors.

Durov may be punished with 5 to 10 years of imprisonment and a fine of €150,000 to €500,000 under the article about managing an online-platform which allows illegal trafficking of forbidden products, content or services.

Durov may remain in custody until 28 August.
