Russian ruler Vladimir Putin held a new meeting with the Russian government and power bloc concerning the situation in the areas close to the Russo-Ukrainian border on 22 August.

Details: Alexei Smirnov, the acting governor of Kursk Oblast, reported that 133,190 civilians had evacuated from border areas of the region, while 19,376 still remained there.

It was also stated that Putin "supported" Smirnov’s initiative about automatic payment of 15,000 roubles (US$164) to the residents of Kursk Oblast who left the region after the breakthrough of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

At the meeting, the governors of Belgorod and Bryansk oblasts asked Putin to fund self-defence regiments.

  • On 12 August, the Ukrainian authorities confirmed for the first time that Ukraine's Armed Forces were involved in a special operation in Kursk Oblast.
