The second Ada-class corvette Hetman Ivan Vyhovskyi, built for Ukraine, has been launched in Türkiye.

Details: Umierov said that he and First Lady Olena Zelenska took part in the launch of the Ukrainian corvette.

The launching ceremony took place at the RMK Marine shipyard in Istanbul. The ceremony was also attended by Oleksii Neizhpapa, Commander of the Ukrainian Navy; Haluk Bayraktar, CEO of Baykar Machine; and Mustafa Dzhemilev, Chairman of the Mejlis, an executive body which represents the Crimean Tatar people.

The Hetman Ivan Vyhovskyi and the Hetman Ivan Mazepa corvettes were built in Türkiye – in view of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The first corvette went on sea trials on 29 May.

Militarnyi web portal stressed that the Ukrainian Ada-class corvettes are armed with a 76mm naval artillery gun, 12.7mm STAMP remote-controlled weapon stations, fire control radars, satellite systems, electronic warfare systems, and Mk 36 SRBOC dipole jamming systems. 

Background:

  • In August 2022, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy named the first Ada-class corvette of the Ukrainian Navy, which was being built by Türkiye, after Hetman Ivan Mazepa.
  • In August 2023, it was reported that Türkiye would build a second Ada-class corvette for the needs of the Ukrainian Navy, and the ship was laid at a shipyard in Istanbul.
  • On 8 March 2024, Zelenskyy named the second corvette after Hetman Ivan Vyhovskyi.
