Long-range drones from the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) and defence forces, including the Air Force, Special Operations Forces, the Unmanned Systems Forces of Ukraine, Defence Intelligence of Ukraine (DIU), and other branches – have carried out the largest attack on Russian military airfields since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Details: UP sources confirm that this was a deliberately planned operation to prevent the Russians from using these airfields that host the jets capable of launching Kh-101 missiles at the front line and Ukrainian cities alike.

Russian war correspondents on social media reported that the strike was effective because Russian air defence could not protect these facilities.

Local Telegram channels mentioned 10 explosions at the Savasleyka air base alone, from which Russian MiG-31K interceptors regularly take off to terrorise all of Ukraine with air raids. Such MiGs are considered especially dangerous as they can carry Kinzhal supersonic missiles.

"We are waiting for satellite images of destroyed Russian fighter jets and storage facilities. The SSU continues to methodically weaken the aircraft component of the Russian war machine. Currently, aircraft still give the enemy an advantage in the air, but we will continue to clip the wings of these 'birds,'" a UP source summed up.

Background:

  • Earlier, Russian Telegram channels reported that drones attacked three Russian airfields.
  • In particular, there were reports on a drone attack on the Savasleyka air base in Russia's Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, from which MiG-31K jets take off.
  • A strike on the Baltimor military airfield in Voronezh, where a fire broke out, was reported as well.
  • Local media also reported a drone attack and explosions in Borisoglebsk, Voronezh Oblast. There is no official information, but local residents claimed that the fire caused by the UAV attack occurred at a local military airfield.
  • Later, the Russian Defence Ministry said that Ukraine launched over a 100 drones at military targets in Russia, claiming that the Russian troops downed 117 UAVs.
