Slovak President calls for restraint in negotiations on Ukraine's accession to NATO

Slovak President Peter Pellegrini has said that his country is in favour of restraint in the negotiations on Ukraine's accession to NATO to prevent escalation.

Details: Pellegrini pointed out the differences in the views of the two presidents on the issue of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to NATO.

"The Polish President is in favour of an early start of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to NATO, while we call for restraint. To prevent further escalation of tensions," the Slovak president said.

He also added that he and Duda had a frank discussion about the topic of the next NATO summit to be held in Washington next week. 

"I confirmed that Slovakia has exceeded the amount of investment in defence and at the moment our investment is at 2.11% of GDP," the Slovak president said in response to Duda's proposal that at the next summit, countries should contribute 3% of GDP to defence.

President Andrzej Duda spoke out against sending Polish troops to Ukraine at a press conference and hoped that "Russia will not bring it to such a situation".

The Polish president also said that Pellegrini shares his position on the need to support Ukraine. 

In the winter, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said that he would block Ukraine's accession to NATO in every way possible.
